Signs Of Substance Abuse:

  • Taking higher doses than prescribed
  • Stealing, forging or selling prescriptions
  • Compulsive use of dugs
  • Inability to carry out normal daily activities without using
  • Excessive mood swings or hostility (especially when drugs are not available)
  • Change in sleep patterns
  • Poor decision making
  • Appearing to be high, unusually energetic or revved up, or sedated
  • Continually “losing” prescriptions
  • Seeking Rx. From more than 1 doctor
  • Frequent requests for refills from doctors
  • Crushing or breaking pills
  • Inconsistent answers to questions about prescription drugs
  • Consumption of over-the-counter drugs for the same conditions that a doctor has prescribed other medication
  • Ordering Rx. Medications over the internet
  • More frequent alcohol consumption

Opioid Painkillers:

  • Constipation
  • Confusion
  • Poor coordination
  • Low blood pressure
  • Decreased breathing rate
  • Depression
  • Sweating

Sedative and Anti-anxiety Medications:

  • Drowsiness
  • Poor judgment
  • Unsteady walking
  • Involuntary and rapid eye movements

Stimulants:

  • Weight loss
  • Irritability
  • Restlessness
  • High blood pressure
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Agitation
