“keepin’ it REAL” is an innovative, culturally grounded, multicultural curriculum that teaches youth the skills they need to refuse drug offers or engage in other high-risk behaviors.
The skills (Refuse, Explain, Avoid, Leave) prepare children to act decisively, confidently, and comfortably by teaching them how to say no in difficult situations. Students also learn how to recognize risk, value their perceptions and feelings, and make choices that support their values.
In between running the province’s only drug rehabilitation center and finishing his college studies, Jerome is taking each day one at a time. “For me, everyday is drug prevention day,” he says. He proudly adds that from the moment when the sight of his son pushed him to turn his life around until today, it has been a continuous recovery for him.
If you talk openly and freely with your kids about drugs and answer questions honestly about things they want to know, you will have a better chance of keeping them from trying drugs. The one thing you do not want to do is lecture.
